GMSVP - Gem and Mineral Society of the Virginia Peninsula Newport News, VA
Purpose: The purpose of the GMSVP is to facilitate the exchange of information and general cooperation among its members by promoting the study of lapidary techniques, mineralogy, paleontology, and allied fields of Earth sciences, to provide the community with a knowledge of the hobby through lectures, demonstrations, and exhibitions and to enjoy good fellowship. The GMSVP welcomes any visitor with an interest in geology, mineralogy and the lapidary arts. Whether you are a hobbyist, artist, collector or interested in Earth Science, the club has something for everyone. Our meetings are held at Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton, VA. Check the Events page for actual dates and times. The December meeting is replaced by a pot luck Christmas party/banquet at the normal meeting time. In May and September we have a Saturday cookout/workshop at Sandy Bottom Park in the Lakeside Pavilion all day long. The picnics also gives members an opportunity to learn the saws and cabochon equipment.
Directions: Take exit 261(Hampton Roads Center Parkway) off of I-64; follow to the first stop light (Big Bethel Rd.) and turn right. Entrance to the park is a short distance on the left. Follow road to the Visitor's Center. The park closes at sundown but the gate off Big Bethel Road is left open on our meeting nights so people can get to the meeting.
It's easy. Simply come to a meeting and sign up. Everyone is welcome. Save time and fill out the Membership Application form above and bring it with you to the meeting.
Membership Benefits: Your GMSVP membership entitles you to receive our monthly newsletters, attend our monthly meetings and board meetings, and to participate in our society-sponsored field trips to rock quarries, mines, and events related to gems and minerals. Additional benefits include workshops on a variety of topics, including wire-wrapping, gem cutting and faceting, and others as well as free entrance to local Treasures of the Earth Shows held in Virginia Beach Convention Center and occasionally in Hampton VA.
