GMSVP - Gem and Mineral Society of the Virginia Peninsula
Our meetings are held the first Thursday of each month except June and December at 7:00 pm at Sandy Bottom Nature Park in Hampton, VA. The December meeting is replaced by a pot luck Christmas party/banquet at the normal meeting time. In May or June we have a Saturday cookout/workshop at Sandy Bottom Park in the Lakeside Pavilion all day long. The club furnishes the charcoal, hot dogs, drinks, ice and paper products. Bring a covered dish and something to grill if hot dogs are not your thing. The park closes at sundown but the gate off Big Bethel Road is left open on our meeting nights so people can get to the meeting.
Directions: Take exit 261(Hampton Roads Center Parkway) off of I-64; follow to the first stop light (Big Bethel Rd.) and turn right. Entrance to the park is a short distance on the left. Follow road to the Visitor's Center.
Want to Become a Member?
It's easy. Simply come to a meeting and sign up. Everyone is welcome. Save time and fill out the Membership Application form below and bring it with you to the meeting. FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions): Do I have to have a large rock collection to join the GMSVP? No, In fact many members join the club with no collection at all. You only need an interest in geology.
Will I feel embarrassed if I don't know much about rocks and minerals? Not at all. We have members with all levels of experience and education.
Are kids welcome? Of course. Well behaved children are always welcome. We even have a special program called "Pebble Pups" just for kids.
Is it expensive to belong to the club? Hardly. We think it is the best deal in town. Dues are $25 per year (January to January) for the first adult in a family, $15 for additional adults and $10 for "Rock Stars" under 18 years and $5 for "Pebble Pups" up to 10 years. Most field trips are free except for transportation.
